WOODSTOCK — While his party was returned to office Thursday, Oxford MPP candidate Dave Hilderley will not be joining Dalton McGuinty’s Liberals at Queen’s Park.

Instead, the local realtor vowed to keep fighting for Oxford County and said he would run in the next election if given the opportunity. Progressive Conservative incumbent Ernie Hardeman won his fifth straight mandate with more than 54% of the unofficial vote. With 184 of the 191 polls reporting, Hardeman had 18,092 votes to Hilderley’s 8,586.

“Provincially, I’m ecstatic,” Hilderley said Thursday at the Quality Hotel and Suites. “We’ll be able to continue as the party that is going to provide leadership for the province.”

Hilderley gained 25% of the vote in his first run at political office.

“Locally I’m disappointed in the numbers, but I’m encouraged by the campaign we ran and the momentum we’re gaining,” he said. “We look forward to the next challenge.”

Hilderley called his political campaign “an incredible experience, very positive, very encouraging. The best part for me was getting to meet so many great people in the county and see so many great things happening in the county. You really gotta get out and about to see all the good things Oxford is offering.”

The former teacher said he felt “very comfortable” going door-to-door to speak with constituents about the Liberal platform, even if some voters were less than enthused with his message.

“I was really pleased we could remain focused on a positive message,” he said. “We didn’t utilize any negative tactics. I think people really received that message positively. It’s all about building for the future. Our party, our platform has the best plan for the future. Despite negative implications from the opposition parties we remain focused on doing the best thing for the people of Ontario.”

Hilderley said his only regret was getting a late start on the campaign trail. It made the challenge of winning a traditionally conservative riding even more difficult.

“With an opportunity for us to build the party and continue to serve the county and strategize,” he said, “we will do what is necessary to turn the county red in the next election.”

INGERSOLL — There was no shortage of questions for Oxford County candidates in the Oct. 6 provincial election during an all-candidates meeting at the CAW Hall Wednesday night.

About 60 people turned out to hear what the candidates had to say on a variety of issues during the two-hour session, sponsored by CAW Local 88 and the Woodstock and Ingersoll Real Estate Board.

The five candidates were quizzed for their thoughts on everything from health care and infrastructure to green energy, job creation and changes to the sex offender registry.

To kick off the debate, each candidate was given three minutes to make an opening statement.

Incumbent Conservative candidate Ernie Hardeman said if his party forms the next government, it plans to pump another $6.1 billion into health care and $2 billion into education.

A Conservative government would also share the gas tax with all municipalities, not just those that have public transit systems.

“We’re going to end Dalton McGuinty’s expensive energy experiments and remove the HST from hydro and heating bills,” he said.

Family Coalition Party candidate Leonard Vanderhoeven said his party is pro-life and would put decision-making power in the hands of local communities and would increase support for families.

“We want to replace the nanny government of Ontario with the family state,” he said.

Green Party candidate Cathy Stewart-Mott said her party would empower local communities and take a big picture approach in tackling issues to avoid “silo thinking.”

“There’s an integral link between the economy and the resource base,” she said.

The Green Party would also “create jobs for the 21st century” and increase support for small and medium-sized businesses and strive for a “sustainable and localized health-care system.”

“We would demand accountability when it comes to government action,” she said.

Liberal Party candidate David Hilderley listed some of what has been accomplished by Ontario’s Liberal government the last few years, including construction of the Toyota plant in Woodstock.

“I’m proud of the priorities of the Liberal government and how well it has provided for people in our community since its election in 2003,” Hilderley said.

More jobs are coming to Oxford, he said, including with Siemens in Tillsonburg.

NDP Party candidate Dorothy Eisen said her party would alleviate some of the burden of Ontario’s harmonized sales tax (HST).

“The NDP will regulate gas prices by setting a weekly maximum to prevent gouging,” Eisen said.

It would also reduce the tax rate for small businesses to 4%, she said, and add one million homecare hours and eliminate ambulance fees.

When it comes to green energy, Hardeman said his party is against the high rates being paid to generate it.

Vanderhoeven said green energy “has a lot of good things,” but has to keep the economy in sight and the current policies will lead to greater debt and “that’s unacceptable.”

Stewart-Mott said her party would like to see the Green Energy Act continue, but “it’s too corporate-driven right now and we need to roll it out to the community.”

Green energy is a way to promote the economy and create jobs, Hilderley said, “and we’re certainly moving forward in this area.”

The NDP would offer incentives to go green, Eisen said.

“We must take climate change seriously and support safe, efficient and affordable energy systems,” she said.

Income Tax Cuts

9 out of 10 Ontario
tax payers are paying less personal income tax as of January 1, 2010.

On average, these people will save about $200 annually.

In addition, 90,000 Ontarians will no longer be paying personal income tax.

Transition
Payments

Most families with net incomes of up to $160,000 have received the first of three
payments totaling $1,000.

Most single people with net incomes of up to $80,000 have received the first of
three payments totaling $300.

To qualify for the two payments scheduled in 2010, you will have to file a 2009 tax return
by April 30, 2011. To qualify for the June 2011 payment you will have to
file a 2010 tax return by April 30, 2012.

Ontario Sales Tax Credit

The new, permanent sales tax credit provides up to $260 annually for each adult and
each child, and is in addition to the existing federal GST credit.

Low- to middle-income Ontario
families started receiving the first quarterly payments of the new tax credit
in August and November 2010.

Subsequent quarterly payments will be delivered in February and May 2011.

The Ontario Sales Tax Credit will provide more than $1 billion in total sales tax
relief in 2010-11.

This is in addition to the Federal GST tax credit.

Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit

The Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit (OEPTC) adds $525 million in support, compared
to property tax relief provided in 2009.

Under the OEPTC, individual taxpayers or families who own or rent a home can annually
receive up to $900 in tax relief, with seniors able to claim up to $1,025.

About 2.8 million low- to middle-income individuals and families will benefit from
the total of about $1.3 billion annually in energy and property tax relief.

Ontario
Clean Energy Benefit

To help Ontario families and seniors through the
transition to a cleaner electricity system, the Ontario government is implementing a new
Ontario Clean Energy Benefit (OCEB).

The credit will provide a 10 per cent benefit to help consumers manage rising
electricity prices for the next five years.

The OCEB, will help more than four million residential consumers – including
seniors – and more than 400,000 small businesses, farms and other consumers,
and will take effect on January 1, 2011.

Ontario Child Benefit

Since 2007, the Ontario Child Benefit has supported
low-income families in giving children the opportunity to reach their full potential.

In 2009, the maximum annual benefit increased from $600 per
child to $1,100 per child. This increase provides benefits to more than 210,000
additional children annually.

The government remains committed to a further increase, from
$1,100 per child to $1,310 per child, by 2013.

Children’s
Activity Tax Credit

On September 13, the Province introduced legislation to establish a new tax credit
to help parents with the cost of enrolling their children in activities that
encourage them to be healthy and active.

Under the legislation, parents and guardians will receive a refundable tax credit
worth up to $50 per child under 16 years of age, or up to $100 for a child with a
disability under age 18.

Ontario’s credit is more extensive than a similar federal program because it is fully refundable (so it benefits
all families, especially those with low incomes) and because it applies to a
wider range of activities including sports, arts and other cultural activities.

This new tax credit provides families about $75 million each year and benefits more
than 1.8 million children in about 1.1 millionOntario families.

This is in addition to the Federal Children’s Fitness Tax Credit and includes
additional extra curricular activities, such as art, music lessons and language
classes.

Eligible senior homeowners will continue to receive additional assistance with their
property taxes through the Ontario Senior Homeowners’ Property Tax Grant, which
started in 2009.

The maximum grant was doubled to $500 in 2010, as announced in the 2008 Budget.

The government is providing $1 billion over the next five years through this grant,
to more than 600,000 seniors with low to middle incomes who own their homes.

WOODSTOCK – The setting for Thursday’s campaign stop in Woodstock might have been Toyota’s way of saying thank you to Dalton McGuinty.

Considering the Liberal government’s recent $70.8-million investment in Toyota’s Project Green Light, it was no surprise that Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada allowed the campaigning premier to use its Woodstock test track for a quick photo opportunity.

Racing up the long track in a red RAV4, McGuinty used his visit to tout the “Ontario Liberal plan for clean energy and manufacturing.”

“Ontario already builds more cars than any other place in North America,” McGuinty said in a media release. “Now, as we move to a clean-energy economy, we’re building the next big thing – electric cars – right here in Ontario.”

Stopping in front of the assembled media on the side of the track, McGuinty described Ontario as “number one” in North American auto manufacturing.

McGuinty’s visit to the plant came just four weeks after his last appearance at the Woodstock facility. The premier joined other dignitaries when Toyota announced that Woodstock would be building the electric version of its popular RAV4.

“Our relentless focus on education means we’re creating a high-skills, high-wage economy – making goods no one else can,” McGuinty said in the release. “Only the Ontario Liberals have a plan to build this economy and create these jobs.

“The other parties would take us off track.”

This was already a familiar refrain for McGuinty on the second day of the provincial election campaign. Thursday morning, the premier was in London, where he joined Samsung executives for the announcement of a new manufacturing plant in London that will mean 200 jobs. Unlike the Samsung plants in Tillsonburg, Windsor and Toronto, which are producing wind turbines and blades, the London facility will be building solar modules.

Because of the Progressive Conservative’s criticism of the Liberal government’s $7-billion deal with Samsung – and other facets of the Green Energy Act – McGuinty said a Tory government would mean an end to these jobs.

“( Conservative Leader Tim Hudak) will not honour this contract,” he said. “He will kill those jobs.”

Samsung spokesperson Cheol Woo Lee, speaking at the same event, said the Ontario manufacturing plants would be built regardless of who wins the October election. Since the Liberal government inked the contract, Hudak has vowed to scuttle the Samsung deal while scrapping the provincial Feed-In Tariff program.

” This is a shady deal that Dalton McGuinty signed behind closed doors, that is going to drive up hydro bills even more for seniors and families,” Hudak said in May. ” It is odious, it is wrong, and I will end the deal.”

Hudak said he would honour existing FIT contracts, which pay renewable energy producers up to 80 cents a kilowatt hour for electricity, but wouldn’t offer any new deals.

Instead, he said he would seek cheaper deals through a competitive process.

Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman echoed his leader’s position, saying the Progressive Conservatives were in favour of green energy.

“It should be part of our energy mix,” he said. “At the same time, ( the Liberal approach) is not serving the people of Ontario.”

Instead if inking an exclusive deal with one corporation “with no competition,” Hardeman said a Tory government would establish a transparent and “affordable” system. The Oxford MPP was also critical of the FIT program, saying the contracts were, in the long term, unsustainable.

” It’s not green energy we’re against,” he said. “It’s the shady deal they signed with Samsung.”

At the Woodstock whistle stop, Oxford Liberal candidate David Hilderley and a throng of redclad supporters joined McGuinty at the test track. Arriving by school bus, the supporters, most carrying Hilderley signs, were warmly greeted by the premier after his zip around the track.

” Thank you everyone for all the work you are doing, for all the support,” the premier said before posing with the crowd. ” Now we’ve got to bring it home.”

Speaking after the premier’s visit, Hilderley reiterated the Liberal support for green energy initiatives, saying the province needed to build its capacity to meet future demands. The Oxford candidate said both solar and wind projects in Oxford would also provide extra income for participating local farm families. While acknowledging the opposition to wind farm projects like Prowind Canada’s Gunn’s Hill in Norwich, Hilderley said Ontario had strict guidelines for these developments to protect the health and comfort of neighbouring residents.

” They’ve had wind farms in Europe for decades and decades,” he said. “They saw the writing on the wall a long time ago.”

As for the visit from the premier, Hilderley said local Liberals were “delighted he was able to be here.”

” Toyota is an amazing place for Woodstock,” Hilderley added, “and all of Oxford. It’s an amazing place for Oxford. This is the only place in the world where they’re manufacturing these (electric RAV4s).”

— There were some old supporters and some brand-new ones who turned up at the official opening of the campaign headquarters of provincial Liberal candidate David Hilderley. “What I’m seeing about this campaign is some old-time Liberals returning to the fold,” campaign chair Mary Anne Silverthorn said. “There are also some really new faces.” Hilderley’s campaign office, located at 584 Dundas St., officially opened Tuesday. Silverthorn described Hilderley’s campaign team as “really highly energized.” “David put together his team himself. He has an amazing repertoire of friends from education and real estate,” she said. “They are amazingly dedicated people.” Silverthorn said the public is invited to come into the office, which is staffed by office manager Jan Matwey and volunteers, for more information about Hilderley and his campaign. “We’re here for fellowship and information,” she said. Silverthorn said Hilderley has over 30 years of experience in education before he began a career as a Century 21 Heritage House real estate agent. “As a educator, I have never heard anything bad about him,” Silverthorn said. “If you can go through 30 years in education without anything negative, you are an amazing person.” Silverthorn, the widow of former Oxford Liberal MP John Finlay, also expressed her support for the Liberal’s platform on education and seniors. “The government is putting more into retrofitting our homes to allow (seniors) to stay in our homes,” she said. “And those of us who worked in education see the benefit of the full-day kindergarten projects. Continuity in education is so important to young children.” hrivers@bowesnet.com

Minister Deb Matthews joined hospital dignitaries and community supports on Friday August 26, 2011 to officially open this cutting edge facility. She spoke eloquently about the importance of a hospital in community – a place for people to come together in joy and grief and care for each other. Minister Matthews also announced new funding – $800,000 annually for the MRI and an additional $9,800,000 for operating costs. It is good news for the City of Woodstock, the County of Oxford and above all, good news for Seniors and families. Clearly, the Ontario Liberal Government shares Dave’s commitment to putting Families First!
